Since 1949, the German Order had an establishment in Darmstadt in the parsonage of St. Ludwig on Wilhelminenplatz.
As per 1 May 1950 the local chaplain’s house “Heilig Kreuz” [Holy Cross] was erected by the ordinariate of the bishop as agency of the parish Liebfrauen.
On 19 March 1951 the sisters of the German Order moved into a renovated part of the former powder magazine, which accommodated the kindergarten and the emergency church.
Until 1961 the number of Catholics in the settlement had increased to approximately 1500, and the number of churchgoers had increased to almost 500. The emergency church got too small in spite of three Sunday masses. The asset council applied for a permission to build the church anew. On 12 September 1962 the new diocesan bishop Hermann Volk permitted the new building of our church for 1963 and 1964. On 23 August 1964 there was the roofing ceremony; the consecration of the church of the Holy Cross by Bishop Hermann Volk took place on Saturday, 18 December 1965 with the participation of the H.H.

Once the parish church was completed in 1965, a vivid church life developed, which is still very procreative. The working groups such as the choir, women's group and youth group were supplemented by the club of the elderly (today: senior circle), various family circles as well as the handicraft circle. In the past few years the children’s school as well as a youth band and – for the littlest members of the community – the toddlers group.
